How You Can Help |
Meals For The Family
This is an on-going need and a tremendous help for the family, they are extremely grateful. They actually had an additional refrigerator delivered to them to keep the extra food and medicine! Tom and Lacene’s parents, siblings and close friends have been visiting the family in order to provide some in-home support for the basic family living necessities so that they can spend quality family time with Michael and Ashley. The additional help is welcomed but as you can imagine they also have more mouths to feed.
While Michael is being actively treated, not worrying about preparing meals has been a tremendous comfort. Michael’s ever-changing medical conditions constantly challenge them, so their plans can change in a moments notice.

Household Items
When Tom and Lacene were being indoctrinated into the confounding technical world of Oncology Medicine at the Children's Cancer Clinic, ever so often, they would hear the staff humming a familiar tune when washing their hands after visiting the restroom. "Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me..."
As it turns out part of imparting the proper method of hand washing to Children who are typically notoriously resistant to soap and watter, is to teach them to sing "Happy Birthday" while scrubbing their digits up to there elbows. Why "Happy Birthday" ? Because they need to scrub at least 15-20 seconds and singing "Happy Birthday" ( and many more...) is just about that long.
These among many other things have been a learning experience for the family. For instance, the use of cloth towels is not permitted in the bathroom for guests. Why ? Because bacteria and germs can transfer easily from one person to another. Michael's immune system is severely suppressed by chemotherapy and so even the smallest amount of the wrong bacteria could put him in the hospital. Imagine every time you need to wash your hands, you use a paper towel? That’s a lot of paper towels! Yup, you guessed it. High on the list of constantly disappearing items in the Downing Family household, Paper Towels. For now, Paper Towels, Anti-bacterial soap in pump dispensers, cleaning supplies, surgical masks and gloves are just some of the things that the family goes through very quickly.

Giving Blood
Michael will most likely need several blood transfusions while undergoing Chemotherapy treatment. While the thought is greatly appreciated, direct blood donations to Michael are too expensive to process and the blood can only be held for a relatively short period of time. Because we do not know exactly when he will need it, the family has requested that you donate blood on behalf of Michael Downing at the or through your local Red Cross.

Contributions to CHOA
Michaels Treatment Facility, CHOA in Colorado Springs is expanding in 2004. The facility provides children with a comfortable “home-like” atmosphere where they can play video games, watch movies and enjoy their favorite music. The doctors, nurses and staff are professionals, board certified to care for Oncology Pediatrics. We hope that we can help them with their needs, providing the children with comfortable furniture and a peaceful atmosphere that is so needed. Your help is greatly appreciated. More details will follow later. |
